PE

Physical Education is taught as a classroom subject from Year 10 for GCSE.
The OCR GCSE Physical Education course is an academically rigorous and practically engaging qualification that appeals to students who have a genuine passion for sport, physical activity, and health. It is particularly well-suited for pupils who are active participants in a variety of sports, are curious about the science underpinning human performance, and are keen to understand the psychological and socio-cultural factors that influence competitive sport and participation. This comprehensive course offers a look into both the practical and theoretical aspects of sport and physical activity, aiming to develop students' understanding of how to lead a healthy, active lifestyle and perform at their best.

Component 1: Physical Factors Affecting Performance (30%)
This component focuses on the science behind sporting performance. Students will explore how the body systems work, how they adapt to exercise, and what is needed to optimize physical performance.
Applied Anatomy and Physiology: We study the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems, and how they respond to acute and chronic exercise.
Physical Training: Students learn about the components of fitness, the principles of training (e.g., FITT, specificity), and effective injury prevention and recovery methods.

Component 2: Socio-cultural Issues and Sports Psychology (30%)
This section moves beyond the purely physical, investigating the psychological and social factors that influence participation and performance in sport.
Socio-cultural Influences: We examine the role of sport in society, including issues like ethics, drugs in sport, the influence of the media, and factors affecting participation (e.g., gender, race, disability).
Sports Psychology: Students learn about motivation, personality, and the role of arousal and anxiety in performance. We also cover practical skills like goal setting and imagery to enhance psychological preparation.
Health, Fitness and Well-being: This unit looks at the benefits of an active lifestyle and the importance of balanced nutrition.

Component 3: Performance in Physical Activity and Sport (40%)
This is the practical element of the course, which assesses the student's ability to perform, analyse, and evaluate in a range of activities.
Practical Performance (30%): Students are assessed on their practical ability in three different physical activities: one team activity, one individual activity, and a third from either category. Performance is graded on skills, technique, and decision-making in conditioned and competitive situations.
Analysis and Evaluation (10%): Students must complete a written Personal Exercise Programme (PEP) based on a chosen activity. This involves analysing their own performance, identifying strengths and weaknesses, creating a six-week training plan, and evaluating its effectiveness.

Assessment Structure:

This course provides an excellent foundation for further study in areas like A-Level PE, Sport Science, and related degrees. It also equips students with transferable life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and analytical thinking.
